NPI has been developing business computer solutions since 1987, specializing in computer networking and Internet security. We became interested in the spam problem as it affected our business and the businesses of our many clients. We started researching the issue and testing the currently available anti-spam products in 2001. After over a year of study, we decided none of the available anti-spam solutions worked well enough "out of the box" to meet our standards and the needs of our clients. What was required was an ever-changing, continually-updated response to spam -- a combination of a powerful appliance at the client site, with continual updates and service provided by NPI.

With our security background and deep understanding of computer networking and messaging systems, we knew we had the knowledge and people to create something better, and we started our development effort in December 2001.

Our product team, lead by Eric Hart and Rob Mount, developed criteria for the ideal solution (check out our competitive matrix) and started a 20-month process. They selected a core of the best free and commercial products on which to build SpamRejector™, including a secure hardware platform, a hardened LINUX kernel, SendMail, SpamAssassin, Canit-PRO from Roaring Penguin Software, and F-Prot from FRISK Software.*  To this foundation, they added an NPI-developed update process, and the continuously-updated Adaptive Acuity Engine™ for the best possible detection accuracy.

By late 2002, we had invested over 1000 hours of research and development in the SpamRejector™, and had a prototype up and running at NPI. Further testing and refinement improved the initial service offering and ongoing maintenance process. In May 2003, we invited several clients to participate in an extensive pilot and we continued to make improvements based on their feedback. In July 2003, we formally launched the service and shipped our first official released version. By the end of the summer, we had SpamRejectors™ blocking spam from New York to California.

The Team Behind the SpamRejector™
After intensively testing a variety of spam-blocking options on the market, we realized that if we wanted a secure, easy-to-use, flexible, automatically-updated, highly precise anti-spam service, we'd have to create it ourselves. We did.
